Arguments over both how children learn to read - and how best to teach this transformative skill - have raged for decades. Although a more evidence-informed approach to reading instruction has gained momentum, the prolonged debate did result in some casualties. In this brief presentation, the immense value of the change in focus will be discussed alongside some of the less desirable aspects of the subsequent fallout.
